Since the mid-1980s he has studied Chinese language, culture, philosophy, and martial arts. He has lived in both China and Taiwan, and has traveled extensively throughout China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia, much of it by bicycle. He is especially fond of highland tribal areas and their peoples.
